The Community Action Partnership of Kern’s (CAPK) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation and e-filing services to low-income & medium-income individuals and families. Our IRS-certified staff and volunteers are dedicated to helping clients maximize their refunds by ensuring they claim eligible credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC).
In addition to tax preparation, VITA provides assistance with:
- ITIN applications and renewals – 2 Certified Acceptance Agents in the office to assist
- Claiming Child Tax Credits and Earned Income Credit
- Understanding and responding to letters from IRS and/or Franchise Tax Board

VITA processes ITIN applications
At VITA, as Certified Acceptance Agents (CAA), we are authorized to process and submit ITIN applications for undocumented individuals. Additionally, the VITA program maintains strict confidentiality and does not share any information with external agencies.

If you have any questions or concerns about how applying for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) or how filing a tax return with an ITIN could impact your individual immigration status or case, please talk to an immigration attorney before you submit your ITIN application or tax return.
What do you need to file your taxes?
- Picture ID for the taxpayer and their spouse (if applicable)
- Social Security cards or ITIN documentation for every person on the return
- All W-2s, 1099 and any other documentation of income (retirement, interest, dividend, etc.)
- All 1098 Forms for educational expenses
- 1095A Form for health insurance purchased through Covered California
- Childcare provider information: Name – Address – Phone Number – Tax ID # or SSN – Amount Paid
- Bank account number and routing number for direct deposit
- Previous year’s tax return (not required, but helpful)
- Download & fill out Form 13614-C in English or Spanish
- Please bring all Documents & Forms to any of our VITA locations
