The Community Action Partnership of Kern’s (CAPK) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation and e-filing services to low-income & medium-income individuals and families. Our IRS-certified staff and volunteers are dedicated to helping clients maximize their refunds by ensuring they claim eligible credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC).

In addition to tax preparation, VITA provides assistance with:

  • ITIN applications and renewals – 2 Certified Acceptance Agents in the office to assist
  • Claiming Child Tax Credits and Earned Income Credit
  • Understanding and responding to letters from IRS and/or Franchise Tax Board

Our services are available year-round

To schedule a free appointment, please call 2-1-1 or 1-800-273-2275 for out of area phone numbers. Our main office is located at 300 19th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301. By utilizing CAPK's VITA program, clients can save on tax preparation fees and receive guidance from knowledgeable professionals committed to serving our community.

VITA processes ITIN applications

At VITA, as Certified Acceptance Agents (CAA), we are authorized to process and submit ITIN applications for undocumented individuals. Additionally, the VITA program maintains strict confidentiality and does not share any information with external agencies.

What do you need to file your taxes?

  1. Picture ID for the taxpayer and their spouse (if applicable)
  2. Social Security cards or ITIN documentation for every person on the return
  3. All W-2s, 1099 and any other documentation of income (retirement, interest, dividend, etc.)
  4. All 1098 Forms for educational expenses
  5. 1095A Form for health insurance purchased through Covered California
  6. Childcare provider information: Name – Address – Phone Number – Tax ID # or SSN – Amount Paid
  7. Bank account number and routing number for direct deposit
  8. Previous year’s tax return (not required, but helpful)
  9. Download & fill out Form 13614-C in English or Spanish
  10. Please bring all Documents & Forms to any of our VITA locations
