Through a variety of divisions and their respective programs, and in collaboration with other community service agencies, Community Action Partnership of Kern helps participants help themselves and each other. Click on a category or individual program below to see how.

Our Divisons and Programs

Head Start/State Child Development:

  • Head Start

    Head Start is a Federal program for preschool children (ages three to five) from low-income families.

  • Early Head Start

    Early Head Start services are delivered at various early learning centers located throughout Kern County.

  • Home Based

    State-funded preschool for children belonging to low-income families.

Health & Nutrition Services:

  • Food Bank

    The Food Bank distributes more than 7.8 million pounds of food annually throughout Kern County.

  • Women, Infants & Children

    WIC is a nutrition program to help mothers, infants and children below the age of 5 eat well and stay healthy.

  • East Kern Family Resource Center

    Provides learning activities, parent support and social services, parenting/family development classes, case management, advocacy, and health and wellness services.

  • Migrant Childcare

    Provides services to migrant working families. Entry counties are: Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Tulare, and Fresno.

Community Services & Development:

  • 2-1-1 Kern County

    2-1-1 Kern County provides information and referral services to community health and human services.

  • Energy Program

    CAPK’s Energy Program assists income-eligible residents with utility bill payment assistance, free weatherization and energy education at no cost.

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

    The VITA program has helped thousands of low- and medium-income families with free tax preparation.

  • Friendship House

    Friendship House provides educational and recreational services to children from low-income homes, as well as resources for the entire community.

  • Shafter Youth Center

    Youth are empowered to live healthier lives through programs that focus on nutrition, education, and active healthy living.
